We tease our friend Maggie that she may regret us having her phone number! Why? Because she is our superhero--and we call on her often! Her secret super power? PASSION FOR NATURE! This comes out in so many ways, and yet "Feathered friends" especially make her heart beat fast.
She works with the caring and dedicated rescuers at Tidewater Rehabilitation & Environmental Education. As one of their volunteers, she has THREE times in the past few months helped us. First it was an Egret that likely got knicked by a car. Then it was an Egret that was lethargic in our driveway. By the way, that was a Friday night in the summer, which means she drove hours through traffic to bring this creature to a wildlife rescue specialist for help.
On our September Paddle & Pint Tour, we found a young Gull in distress. What did we do? We called Maggie in the midst of the tour. She stopped what she was doing, came down, captured the bird and once again drove (using her own car, gas, time) the Gull to another rescue specialist.
You know what? Each time she came, she thanked us for calling. That's speaks volumes, doesn't it?
The moral of the story is that you can be a Superhero, too, and feel super good in the process. It's SO SIMPLE! When you see a creature in need, pick up your phone and call one of the wildlife rescue agencies.
Oh, and a donation can surely help offset the costs of gas, food and vet bills. The gift of time and caring? Well, that is priceless.
